Knitted Top Fabric Consumption

Body Fabric (kg/dozen) = [(Body Length + Sleeve Length + Allowance) × (Chest + Allowance) × 2 × GSM × 12] ÷ 10,000,000 × (1 + Wastage%)

Formula Guide
Body Length Formula
Body Length + 4 cm
1 cm: Shoulder sewing allowance
3 cm: Body hem (2 cm fold + 1 cm stitch)
Sleeve Length Formula
Sleeve Length + 4 cm
1 cm: Sleeve join sewing allowance
3 cm: Sleeve hem (2 cm fold + 1 cm stitch)
Body Length + Sleeve Length + 8
Chest Width Formula
Chest + 4 cm
2 cm: Left side seam allowance
2 cm: Right side seam allowance
Chest + 4 cm
For Costing Consumption Based on Measurements (cm)

Body Fabric (kg/dozen) = [(Body Length + Sleeve Length + 8) × (Chest + 4) × 2 × GSM × 12] ÷ 10,000,000 × (1 + Wastage%)

For Costing Consumption Based on Measurements (inches) =
Consumption (kg/dozen) = [(Body Length + Sleeve Length + 3) × (Chest + 1.5) × 2 × GSM × 12] ÷ 1,550,000 × ( 1 + Wastage % )
Consumption Summary
Body Length 70 cm
Sleeve Length 20 cm
Allowance 8 cm
Chest 55 cm
Allowance 4 cm
GSM 180
Wastage 5%

Base consumption

2.55
kg/dozen

With 5% wastage

2.68
kg/dozen
Example

If wastage is 5%, multiply by 1.05

Based on Measurements (cm)

[(70 + 20 + 8) × (55 + 4) × 2 × 180 × 12] ÷ 10,000,000 = 2.55 kg/dozen

Final Consumption

2.55 × 1.05 = 2.68 kg/dozen

Based on Measurements (inches)

[(27.5 + 8 + 3) × (22 + 1.5) × 2 × 180 × 12] ÷ 1,550,000 = 2.52 kg/dozen

Final Consumption

2.52 × 1.05 = 2.64 kg/dozen

× 2
Why multiply by 2 ?
Body have two fabric panels: front and back part. This accounts for both pieces.
× 12
Why multiply by 12 ?
Converts per-piece to per-dozen consumption. 1 dozen = 12 pieces.
GSM
What is GSM ?
Grams Per Square Meter. The weight of fabric per square meter. Higher GSM = heavier fabric.
÷10M
Why divide by 10,000,000 ?
Converts cm² to m² and grams to kilograms. Standard unit conversion factor.

The Magic Formula

Know the length and width, and you can calculate the consumption of any knitted Fabric item.

Consumption (kg/dozen) Based on Measurements (cm) =
[( Length × Width × GSM × 12 )] ÷ 10,000,000 × ( 1 + Wastage % )
Consumption (kg/dozen) Based on Measurements (inches) =
[( Length × Width × GSM × 12 )] ÷ 1,550,000 × ( 1 + Wastage % )
× 12
Why multiply by 12 ?
Converts per-piece to per-dozen consumption. 1 dozen = 12 pieces.
GSM
What is GSM ?
Grams Per Square Meter. The weight of fabric per square meter. Higher GSM = heavier fabric.
÷10M
Why divide by 10,000,000 ?
Converts cm² to m² and grams to kilograms. Standard unit conversion factor.
Critical Understanding

Why Wastage Is Essential

Cutting Wastage

  • GSM variations from dyeing
  • Unusable fabric from roll ends
  • Small unusable scraps
  • Fabric rejections requiring replacement

Sewing Wastage

  • Alterations needed during assembly
  • Panel rejections from defects
  • Stitching mistakes
  • Rework requirements

Finishing Wastage

  • Panel shrinkage during finishing
  • Stains appearing in process
  • Defects found in QC
  • Final inspection failures
